When you rent a storage unit from a company like Public Storage, and you don't pay your rent, they can repossess everything in that unit. If you read the contract very closely, you will find the information pertaining to repossession if rent isn't paid. By law, once they repossess your property, they can auction it off to the public.

If you were up to date on your rental fees, no, they shouldn't have repoed the unit.

If you were delinquent in your rental payments, that's another story. Your rental contract should have the terms of the rental defined, and most portable storage companies do have repossession provisions in their contracts.

I had a storage unit in my back yard. I rented my home to a 'friend' who damaged the storage shed. The 'friend' replaced the shed with a much better unit, to which I compensated my friend for about half the price. This was two years ago. The 'friend' said that they paid it off.

Today I come home and the storage unit is gone. I find out that he may not have paid the unit off. The friend did not have any belongings in the shed.

They come out with a regular toe truck and hook to the storage building with a special kind of fork. You can't hide the storage shed and you can expect that if you don't work out some payment plan with the finance company, you will be getting the storage shed repoed. The worst part about it is, you will find out they don't alert you in any way. They will simply come and get the storage building without your permission. They do not need permission to come on your property because they have the legal right to repo the shed no matter who's property it's on.
