My rights as self-employed mechanic on collecting unpaid invoice on vehicle being repossed while sitting on my business property.

I am a self-employed auto mechanic and I recently did a complete brake job on a vehicle and when customer called several days after he was supposed to come pick it up and pay the invoice, to tell me that "Rent n Roll" (tire and rim business) was coming to repo his tires I asked him when I could expect payment from him, he stated he did not have it all but could pay some and I told him to come pay what he could and we would discuss making the final payment. He then told me that the dealer he purchased it from was looking to repo it as well but he did not tell the dealer where the vehicle was (at my shop). Now he has not showed up to pay anything and I would like to know my rights if the repo men show up for his vehicle. I will never collect the invoice amount if it is repossessed. Will I be breaking the law if I do not release it? Is it the dealer/repo men's responsibility to pay me, how will I get mine?

Lien the vehicle and place the lien on the title with the secretary of state or if the repo man comes, he has no right to enter someone else's private property to recover a car without your permission. Call the dealership, tell them they can have the car for the invoice amount, otherwise the law says a mechainc does not have to release it to the owner without full payment. Make sure you lock it up behind a gate every night. If the repo man enters through a gate at night he can be arressted. You'll get you money or a car to sell. Read up on mechanic liens.

If you are operating an unlicensed business then you have no rights to detain the vehicle. The best bet would be to hide it somewhere.
